Thieves decamp with idol, silver ornaments and cash

VASCO, JAN 28
Burglars decamped with an idol, silver ornaments and cash from Dattatraya Mandir at Thana-Cortalim in the wee hours of Thursday and later made an unsuccessful attempt to burgle the Our Lady of Piety Chapel, Sotrant-Cortalim.

According to Verna police, the burglars decamped with Lord Dattatraya idol, which was used during processions, silver paduka (foot) worth Rs 60,000 and cash Rs 5,000 from the temple.
Speaking to reporters, Devasthan member Prabhakar Salgaocar said burglars entered the temple by breaking open the main door.

“Luckily, the committee had removed money from the donation box on Wednesday. The burglars carried donation box with them and left it abandoned in the fields behind the temple,” said Salgaocar.

“The incident came to light when the temple priest went to the temple to perform the morning ritual. Later, he along with residents and members of temple committee informed Verna police,” added Salgaocar.

In the second incident, burglars broke the main door of Our Lady of Piety Chapel at Sotrant, which is barely a kilometre from the Dattatraya Mandir.

Verna police PI Ranjendra Prabhudesai said burglars ransacked ritual the chapel, but nothing was found missing from the chapel.

Verna police pressed the dog squad and finger print experts into service to get lead in case and registered a case against unknown persons under Section 457, 380 r/w 34 IPC.

It may be recalled that 15 days ago, burglars had targeted two temples in Mormugao Taluka, Shree Rashtroli Jay Santoshi Mata Mandir at New Vaddem and Shree Damodar temple at Cansulim.
